Step by step

  1. Hang two bags from each end of a coat hanger: your scale is ready.
  2. Pick two objects and hold one in each hand—everyone guesses which is heavier.
  3. Once the bets are in, kids are completely hooked.
  4. Place the objects in the bags and watch the hanger tilt.
  5. Test a big light cushion against a tiny heavy stone, and enjoy the surprise.
  6. Rank 4 or 5 objects from lightest to heaviest, or find out how many tokens weigh the same as an apple.
