Build the Butterfly Life Cycle
Put the butterfly cards—egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly—in order, then lay them out in a circle to show how the butterfly lays an egg and the cycle starts all over again. We use the real, fascinating words (chrysalis!), and a quick backyard caterpillar hunt brings the whole thing to life.

Step by step
- Print and cut out the life cycle cards (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly).
- Look at each card together and introduce the exact words (chrysalis!) without dumbing them down.
- Let your child put the stages in order, guiding them with simple questions ("What does the caterpillar turn into next?").
- The butterfly lays an egg, and it all starts over again.
- Listen to your child tell the whole story in their own words, using the cards as clues.
- Hunt for caterpillars in the garden or tadpoles in a spring pond, then try sorting out other mixed-up life cycles (like frogs or plants).
