Cause-and-Effect Toys

Place just one mechanical toy in front of your baby: a roly-poly toy that bobs back up, a pull-string music box, or a pop-up toy. Show them once, slowly. Then let them explore, miss, and try again until it clicks all on their own.

Step by step

  1. Pick just one cause-and-effect toy at a time (roly-poly, pull-string toy, or pop-up box).
  2. Sit your baby down comfortably with the toy right in front of them, clearing away all other distractions.
  3. Demonstrate how it works just once, moving slowly, without speaking during the action.
  4. Let them experiment without guiding their hand—trial and error is how they learn. If they get a little frustrated, wait a moment before stepping in.
  5. Put words to what just happened afterwards: "You pushed it... and it popped back up!"
  6. Tidy the toy away together and rotate it with others during the week to keep things fresh.
