Dancing Spiral Mobile

Three or four colorful paper spirals hanging from a string above the play mat, spinning with the slightest breeze. At first, it's a lovely show to watch. Then, around 4 to 6 months, lower it a bit and it becomes a fun target to swat at.

Step by step

  1. Cut out 3 or 4 spirals and simple shapes from colorful paper (that part is for you).
  2. Hang them from a string above the play mat, keeping them just out of reach for now.
  3. Lay your baby underneath during a calm awake window; a cracked window or a gentle breeze is enough to make them dance.
  4. Let your baby watch and track them with their eyes without shaking the mobile yourself—let them take it in at their own pace.
  5. Over the coming weeks, lower the mobile so your baby can bat at it, then grab it.
  6. Swap out shapes and colors when interest fades. Around 15 to 18 months, let your toddler pick the paper.
