The Sound Hunt

A zero-prep treasure hunt: "I'm looking for something that starts with sss...". Scan the room together, make guesses, spot the soap, and stretch out the sound ("ssss-oap!"). Then let your child pick a sound while you do the hunting.

Step by step

  1. Pick a long, easy sound to start with (ssss, mmmm, ffff).
  2. "I'm looking around the room for something that starts with sss...".
  3. Scan the room, walk around, wonder out loud.
  4. Check the sound, not the letter: "ssss-oap... yes! We hear sss at the start!".
  5. Your child picks a sound and you search—make silly mistakes on purpose so they can happily correct you.
  6. Try trickier sounds, clap out syllables, or play with simple rhyming words.
