Ground-Level Balance Beam

Step by step

  1. Lay a sturdy board flat on the floor (or make a line with paper strips, or find a low fallen log at the park).
  2. Clear the area around it. Go barefoot or wear flexible shoes.
  3. Walk across once to demonstrate: arms out for balance, looking straight ahead.
  4. Let your child cross at their own pace for a few rounds, standing close by without automatically holding their hand. Stepping off is not a fall: just step back on and keep going.
  5. Try backwards, sideways, carrying an object, or balancing a beanbag on your head.
  6. Take turns inventing custom challenges for each other, and finish on a successful run.
