Build the Butterfly Life Cycle

Put the butterfly cards—egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly—in order, then lay them out in a circle to show how the butterfly lays an egg and the cycle starts all over again. We use the real, fascinating words (chrysalis!), and a quick backyard caterpillar hunt brings the whole thing to life.

Step by step

  1. Print and cut out the life cycle cards (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly).
  2. Look at each card together and introduce the exact words (chrysalis!) without dumbing them down.
  3. Let your child put the stages in order, guiding them with simple questions ("What does the caterpillar turn into next?").
  4. The butterfly lays an egg, and it all starts over again.
  5. Listen to your child tell the whole story in their own words, using the cards as clues.
  6. Hunt for caterpillars in the garden or tadpoles in a spring pond, then try sorting out other mixed-up life cycles (like frogs or plants).
