The Textured Paper Mat
A patchwork of contrasting paper textures taped side by side on the floor: smooth tissue paper, crinkly kraft paper, scratchy corrugated card, and bumpy embossed paper. Baby explores barefoot and with bare hands, patting, scratching, and scrunching patch by patch.

Step by step
- Gather rectangular sheets of different textured paper (tissue paper, kraft paper, corrugated card, embossed paper).
- Tape them side by side on the floor to make a sensory mat of contrasting textures.
- Place baby on their tummy or sitting at the edge of the mat, with bare hands and bare feet.
- Let them pat, scratch, and scrunch each texture at their own pace, without directing them. A torn corner goes straight to the mouth: stay right beside them.
- Put words to what they feel ("soft... scratchy... crinkly!").
- Fold up the mat together; around 15–18 months, play a game finding "the crinkly one" with their eyes closed.
