Clapping Syllable Cards

Picture cards and three spots marked 1, 2, 3: say each word out loud while clapping its beats—el-e-phant, three claps—and place the card on number 3. Make silly mistakes on purpose now and then; kids love correcting you!

Step by step

  1. Print the picture cards and set out three spots marked 1, 2, 3.
  2. Say "el-e-phant" while clapping each beat, and count: 3!
  3. Let your child draw a card, name it, and say it again while clapping.
  4. Count the claps together and put the card on the matching number spot.
  5. Make a deliberate mistake from time to time and let them joyfully correct you.
  6. Jump across squares for each syllable, or hunt for 4-syllable words around the house.
