Free movement on a big mat

A large firm mat, comfy clothes, and two or three simple toys within reach: baby does all the rest. They roll, pivot, reach out, and try new moves at their own pace while you sit back and watch. A wonderful daily habit.

Step by step

  1. Pick a time when baby is fed and well-rested, and clear a large, firm mat.
  2. Dress them in comfy clothes (bare feet are best) and lay them on their back right in the center of the mat.
  3. Place 2 or 3 simple toys within reach or just slightly to the side—nothing more.
  4. Sit nearby where they can see you, completely available without your phone: your calm presence gives them the safety to explore.
  5. Do not roll them over or hand them toys, even if they grunt with effort: that struggle is where the real learning happens. Quietly cheer on their efforts.
  6. Wrap up before they get overtired, talk about what they did ("you rolled around so much today!"), and transition to quiet time.
