Exploratory Finger Painting

Two dollops of finger paint on a big sheet of paper, an old T-shirt, and little hands diving in: smearing, mixing, making palm prints. Yellow and blue turn to green right before their eyes, and nobody expects it to look like anything specific.

Step by step

  1. Cover the table, lay out a large sheet of paper, slip on an old T-shirt, and get two primary colors of finger paint ready.
  2. Paint stays on the paper (and hands!); keep a damp cloth within reach.
  3. Squeeze two dollops of paint onto the paper and let their hands dive right in, no instructions needed.
  4. Put their discoveries into words (“yellow and blue... make green!”) without nudging them to draw anything specific. If they hesitate to get messy, start with just one finger—the rest will follow.
  5. Stamping palms, sliding fingers, and maybe trying sponges or bottle caps.
  6. Wash hands together, let the masterpiece dry, and hang it up at your child's eye level.
