Step by step

  1. Cut out a stash of colourful shapes (circles, triangles, squares, strips); let your child help if they are ready to use scissors.
  2. Sort the shapes into small bowls or trays and set a plain sheet of paper in front of your child.
  3. Let them explore freely at first—placing, moving, and shifting pieces with zero rules.
  4. "Can you make a house? A cat? A robot?", without showing an example.
  5. Snap a photo of their favourite designs before sweeping them away—clearing the board is part of the fun.
  6. Set a piece limit, give them a drawing to copy, try real tangrams around 5–6 years old, or glue down their ultimate favourite masterpiece.
