The Textured Paper Mat

A patchwork of contrasting paper textures taped side by side on the floor: smooth tissue paper, crinkly kraft paper, scratchy corrugated card, and bumpy embossed paper. Baby explores barefoot and with bare hands, patting, scratching, and scrunching patch by patch.

Step by step

  1. Gather rectangular sheets of different textured paper (tissue paper, kraft paper, corrugated card, embossed paper).
  2. Tape them side by side on the floor to make a sensory mat of contrasting textures.
  3. Place baby on their tummy or sitting at the edge of the mat, with bare hands and bare feet.
  4. Let them pat, scratch, and scrunch each texture at their own pace, without directing them. A torn corner goes straight to the mouth: stay right beside them.
  5. Put words to what they feel ("soft... scratchy... crinkly!").
  6. Fold up the mat together; around 15–18 months, play a game finding "the crinkly one" with their eyes closed.
