The Treasure Basket

A shallow basket filled with about 15 real everyday items from around the house: a wooden spoon, a metal ring, a sponge, a soft brush, a scrap of fabric. Sitting up, your baby picks, compares, mouths, and bangs objects to their heart's content, totally absorbed for surprisingly long stretches.

Step by step

  1. Fill a shallow basket with 12 to 15 safe, natural everyday objects (wooden spoon, metal ring, clean sponge, soft brush, scrap of fabric).
  2. Nothing sharp, too small, or detachable, because everything will go straight into their mouth.
  3. Place the basket right in front of your baby once they are sitting securely, during a calm moment with no other toys in sight.
  4. Don't hand them items or name things while they explore. Silence is what protects their deep focus.
  5. Your baby chooses, compares, sucks, and taps. The session can easily last 20 to 30 minutes.
  6. Wash the items afterward, and swap out 3 or 4 of them regularly to spark fresh curiosity.
