Finish the Pattern Strips

Paper strips with starting patterns—red, blue, red, blue—and paper tokens to keep the line going. Once they crack the code, swap roles: your child invents their OWN secret pattern, and you have to guess it (making a few playful mistakes along the way!).

Step by step

  1. Print the pattern strips (AB, AAB, ABC) and cut out the colored tokens.
  2. Point and say the start together ("red, blue, red, blue...").
  3. Ask "what comes next?" and let them place the matching token.
  4. Let them keep the pattern going as long as they want.
  5. Your child invents their OWN rule, you guess and complete it, making a few mistakes so they can correct you.
  6. Recreate patterns with sounds (clap-snap) and dance moves.
